Earlier today, the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan swore-in Senator Smart Adeyemi as the representive of Kogi West Senatorial District.
Recall that Adeyemi emerged winner at the recent supplementary election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Recall that an Appellate court sitting in Abuja in its verdict had granted the prayers of Adeyemi to nullify the election with which the Senator Dino Melaye had prevailed to go to the Senate, thereby calling for a rerun elections in the senatorial district.
Announcing the winner, the INEC’s returning Officer, Prof Olaide Lawal had said that Adeyemi of All Progressives Congress polled a total of 88,373 votes to defeat PDP’s Senator Dino Melaye who polled 62,133 votes.
Adeyemi’s emergence has changed the equation at the Senate as the All Progressives Congress (APC) now has 63 Senators with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Young Democratic Party (PDP) having 46 and one member respectively.
Recall that Adeyemi who was former Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) had earlier served in the 6th and 7th Senate, thereby making him a Ranking member of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.
