House of Reps Speaker, Gbajabiamila kicks against electricity tariff increase
Speaker, House of Representatives, National Assembly, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila has joined Nigerians to kick against the purported intention of DisCos to increase electricity tariff.
Gbajabiamila on Friday made the statement on his tweeter handle, saying that DisCos is not reliable given its antecedent of wobbling and fumbling despite promises it has made in the past.
Responding to the said increase in tariff, Gbajabiamila stated on his tweeter; “There is no guarantee that after any electricity tariff hike the DisCos will not continue with the nefarious practice of bills estimation or provide uninterrupted power supply.
“I believe National Assembly Nigeria should ensure that any increase in electricity tariff if at all should be cost-reflective and not just a whimsical increase with no empirical basis.
“Also, such increase should only be made after the proposed amendment to the law criminalizing estimated billing is signed into law. I intend to meet and discuss this with Attorney General of the Federation and other relevant authorities.
Recall that DisCos had approved increase in electricity tariff, which drew so much resistance from both individuals and groups, including trade unions. Though DisCos had rescinded her decision, saying it was not immediate.
With the Speaker of House of representatives adding a voice to the vexatious issue, it is believed that DisCos would either break or turn a new leave.
