Imo state University Owerri has introduced Igbo language as a compulsory general course for every undergraduate of the institution.

The vice Chancellor of the university prof. Victoria Adaobi Obasi stated this during the 28th matriculation ceremony held recently at the institution.

She said that the decision was made to ensure that they preserve the language that is the primary marker of our identity as a people.

According to her, the university is also about to construct petroleum and chemical engineering building which will be of enormous benefit to the students.

“We have commissioned our female hostel. It is currently operational and functional. Similarly, we recently commissioned our faculty of humanities complex, including faculty of education complex virtually ready for commissioning”, she stated.

Prof. Obasi further cautioned the matriculating student to avoid cultisim, examination misconduct, indecent dressing and truancy stressing that the institution has absolute zero tolerance for such behaviors as punishment for such cardinal offences is expulsion.
