Christian Journalists Insist On Igbo Presidency

The Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists (NACJ) has thrown its weight behind the South East agitation for Igbo Presidency come 2023, to ensure that justice and equity reign supreme in the country’s landscape.

Speaking through its Secretary-General, Dr. Charles Okhai, the group says that its leadership has reviewed the development in the country from 1999 when Nigeria was returned to civil rule to the present and can only agree less that the next President of Nigeria should be of Igbo extraction.

The Secretary-General further said that the country can only get better when every zone is given its due, insisting that whether written or unwritten, power rotation between North and South has come to stay.

He said: “The Nigerian Association of Nigerian Journalists is an umbrella of practicing Christian Journalists who believe in enthroning integrity in the body politic.

“This has been our driving principle to the extent we came up with INTEGRITY AWARD to celebrate those who have distinguished themselves in service. Though they may not be saints but must have made a difference by their conduct and in service.

“The same thing is applicable to Nigeria. It is expected that power should return to the South in 2023. In the South, we have had the South West and the South-South produce presidents. The South East should be encouraged to produce the next President of the country.

“Yes it is politics but we must begin to play politics with integrity. At the end of Nigerian Civil War, Igbo people have had to complain about certain denials, especially when it comes to mainstream national leadership.

“And since Nigeria returned to civil rule, we have had a smooth power rotation between the North and the South. In the South, the South-West and the South-South have had their turns. This time, it is a test case to weigh on the conscience of the country and if the South-East will not be supported to take a shot at the presidency.

“They Igbo people have proved beyond reasonable doubt that they have what it takes to give Nigeria quality leadership. In the area of industry despite working from a very tight angle, they have been able to prove their resilience and creativity.

“For the sake of Nigeria’s future and to help douse the ever rising tension in the country, the political class must rise to the occasion and do the needful.

“For us in Nigerian Association of Christian Journalists (NACJ), we have taken a stand and we urge other zones to support Nigerian President of Igbo extraction.”
