Excerpt:

Can we meet you and give us a brief description of gridlock in the lagos Badagry expressway where your zonal fall under?

My name is Prince Abiodun Kasali, zonal chairman, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), Amuwo odofin lagos state.

Amuwo Odofin is a part of Lagos State where traffic and gridlock have always been the business of the day.

This is due to the movement of heavy duty trucks and containers that ply through the port to the most business ventures in Lagos State and South west called Alaba Electronic International Market, also neighboring countries,
with different container terminals that are stationed in that part of Lagos and beyond. Our road carriages are not sustainable enough, which results to container falling; this usually leads to gridlock or bad roads that needed urgent rehabilitation.

How have you being able to manage and controlling the traffic?

RTEAN President, Alhaji Musa Muhammed instructed all the zonal chairmen in Lagos to appoint task force that can oversee and manage the free movement of vehicles in all the zones, especially areas where traffic is always heavy.

The national president told us to ensure there is free movement of vehicles in our areas, any area affected by traffic, the zonal chairman and his executives will be suspended or they pay fine for not carrying out their work and responsibilities effectively”. some road users are stubborn to control, he notes that everyone is always in a haste to get to their various destination, knowing full well that everyone can’t move at a time. since we started controlling the traffic ourselves the level of movement has improved.

we are calling on the Lagos State Traffic Control Management Agencies to deploy more workers to that area as they might not be able to achieve much if they lASTMA and others are not in place. ” Where we need more hands is at Old Ojo road, that road is the main problem of the axis,” because it is narrow to contain trucks moving on that route. Due to heavy duty trucks and containers plying the road, most of the trucks are parked along the road, and there is no enough space for the trucks to be parked. He said they made move to speak with their managers in order for them to assist in passing of trucks and containers. He said the traffic control agency don’t normally come out regularly in that axis.

What do you think is best solution for the menace?

Traffic control is everyone business, we should come together and join the agencies to make sure we have a ease flow of traffic, because it affect psychologically when stucked in a traffic, our health is more crucial to us, so as a good citizen , let make sure we understand ourselves better and have a mega city transportation structure that we are yearning for…
