NJC Promotes Judge Who Jailed Ex Governors Dariye, Nyame, 17 Others
Following the dismissal of over twenty judges found culpable as a result of petitions written against them, the National Judicial Council (NJC) has recommended the elevation of 18 judges of High Courts across the country to the Court of Appeal.
Among one of them is famous justice Adebukunola Adeoti Ibironke who convicted and incarcerated former two governors Reverend Jolly Nyame andJoshua Dariye respectively.
The NJC took the decision at its 94th meeting held on March 17 to 18, 2021, where it also recommended the appointment of Chief Judges for the FCT, Rivers, Nasarawa, Kogi, Jigawa, Ebonyi and Delta states.
According to a statement by NJC’s Director of Information, Soji Oye, the council considered 24 petitions written against 29 judges, dismissed majority of them but issued strong warning to two judges serving in Lagos and set up a committee to further investigate complaints against a judge.
The NJC, which also recommended the appointment of a President for the Delta State Customary Court of Appeal, set up another panel to ascertain the health status of a. serving judge.
Among the 18 recommended for elevation to the Court of Appeal is Justice Adebukunola Adeoti Ibironke Banjoko of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who convicted and jailed two ex-governors – Reverend Jolly Nyame (Taraba State) and Joshua Dariye (Plateau State) – on corruption charges.
Also elevated is Justice Muslim Sule Hassan, a judge of the Federal High Court and former prosecutor with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
