NASU Flays FG policy On Retirement Age Of Teachers

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Imo State Council has vehemently rejected Federal Government’s discriminatory policy on retirement age of teachers and non-teaching personnel in the country.
The union made up of schools, colleges branches in the Nigeria SUBEB and SEMB made their feelings known when they carried out a peaceful protest at the premises of the SUBEB Owerri, Imo State
The protesters in their great numbers before arriving at the SUBEB office took to the streets of Owerri chanting sungs, displayed placards with inscriptions “is it a crime to be a Non-teaching staff”, “approve 65ys and 45ys for Non-teaching staff”. What is good for the teachers is good for the non- teaching staff”.
In a protest letter issued and duely signed by the Assistant General Secretary of NASU, Magaret Ekeziela, the group demanded for Federal Government’s immediate approval for extension of the retirement of teachers from 35ys of service and 60ys of age to 40yrs and 65yrs respectiveky.
Other demands made in the course of their protest include special salary scale for teachers, provision for rural posting allowance, and teachers conversation on ICT training to mitigate the current death of qualified teachers in the school system.
They regretted that those packages were approved for teachers excluding the non teaching personnel who compliment the work of teachers in the school system.
The group however called on government to include non teaching staff in the implimentation stage of these packages insisting that most of the non teaching staff are professionals and posseses equivalent certificates and experience with the teachers.
While they pointed out that their counterparts equally play vital roles in graduating the pupils and students, they however requested for inclusion of non teaching staff in the SUBEB Board.
