Killings In Ebonyi: Ban On Slaughtering, Eating Of Cow Meat In Afikpo Irreversible  – Says President General

Following the wanton killings in some parts of Ebonyi State by suspected Fulanis Herders, President General (PG) Ohaisu Afikpo community in Ebonyi Southern bloc, Dr. Jasper Okoro said the ban on selling, slaughtering, eating of cow meat in the community would not be reversed.

According reports, the leader said the ban is total and non discriminatory. “The ban stands and must be abided by all no matter how highly placed, no person is allowed to bring or serve cow meat in Afikpo no matter the occasion or event.”

Okoro, a retired veteran journalist told Daily Independent that the ban followed constant attacks on their people by herdsmen, which resulted into killing, rape of their women and assaults.

He explained that the ban was more fuelled by the killing of a young man in the community, Mr. Joseph Ogo of Nkpogoro community along with his wife.

Okoro alleged that herders murdered the man and wife while they were in their farm.

“Even if you are celebrating anything in Afikpo, no matter whom you are, you cannot bring cow or cow meat into Afikpo. The place they used to sale cow meat is no longer functional. People now go for other meat, fish,” he said.

The PG revealed that the ban has been very effective hence the herders have been threatening to attack them. He called on various tiers of government to provide adequate security for the Afikpo communities.

Okoro argued that most states in the northern parts of Nigeria banned sale and consumption of alcoholic drinks in their areas, so queried why the ban on cow and cow meat consumption by Afikpo people should so be protested against.
