Respect For Press Freedom Will Curb Corruption, Solve Nigeria’s Security Challenges, Says Madumere




The former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere has extended his appreciation to Newsmen on the occasion of World Press Freedom day, describing press freedom as key to resolving most of Nigeria’s challenges.

Imo former Deputy Governor’s statement was expressed through his Adviser on Media & Publicity, Uche Onwuchekwa.

Prince Madumere described journalism and other related vocation as the most relegated in the society despite their critical place in national development.

He called on all and sundry to understand the import of press freedom and its importance in national development, calling on government at all levels to protect media practitioners.

Prince madumere stated that the media has always played a major role in critical moments in societies.

The statement in parts: “Beyond the tripartite role of informing, entertaining and educating, the importance of agenda setting and whistle blowing cannot be over emphasized.

“With independence of the media, giving room for freedom of information law apply, the media will be a critical instrument with which Nigeria will evolve into a better and more justiceable nation.

“Issue of corruption and abuse of office will be reduced to the barest minimum since exposing these ills will cause it’s reduction.

“Most developed democracies have always given the media unhindered space to operate as it serves as a watchdog.

“This has tacitly empowered the press to me sniff out and expose grand plots that might cause security breaches.

“It is also noteworthy to mention that most intelligence are gathered from reports in the media.”


Meanwhile Prince Madumere has also called those using the cyber space to eschew fake news and ensure that every information is verified before posting, describing fake news as deadly virus and should be condemned by all and sundry.
