Senate Observes One-Minute Silence For Gulak

The Senate, Tuesday, observed a one-minute silence in honour of All progressives Congress chieftain and former Political Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan, late Ahmed Gulak.

The Red chamber condemned the gruesome murder of Gulak in Owerri, the Imo State capital on his way to the Sam Mbakwe Airport on Sunday morning.

The Senate also urged security services especially the Department of State Services (DSS) to thoroughly investigate the incident and bring to book, all those who plotted and carried out the assassination.

The Senate further resolved to mandate the Senate Ad hoc Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution to pay a condolence visit to the family of the deceased.

These resolutions of the upper chamber followed a point of order moved by the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, at plenary.

Omo-Agege in his lead debate said: “I rise to notify the Senate of the gruesome, barbaric and dastardly murder of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak on the 30th day of May 2021 while on a national assignment on behalf of the Senate Committee on Constitution review where he had served as one of the consultants posted to the Owerri centre in the South East.

“He had served as an adviser to former President Goodluck Jonathan, as his political adviser.

“He was a lawyer – a very brilliant lawyer at that. Apparently, it was in that capacity that his relationship with me as the chairman of the Committee on Constitution Review that I recommended and engaged him as one of the few brilliant men that we hired to help the committee in carrying out its assignment.

“We members of the committee, we are shattered by his demise, we believe that this is one death too many and for sure, it is most unfair for this very brilliant life to have been cut down in his prime.”

Senate President Ahmad Lawan, in his contribution, described the late Gulak as “a very straightforward, committed, dedicated citizen of this country.

“A very distinguished politician who made tremendous contributions at both the state level in Adamawa state and the national level.

“The murder of this great son of Nigeria is something that our security agencies must unravel the murderers and in fact, the people behind the murder itself.

“This is necessary in all the cases and in all the murders and assassinations that take place in our country in almost on a daily basis.

“Our security agencies, particularly our intelligence agencies, must continue to fish out such issues even before they happen.

“This is the essence of the intelligence that is supposed to be given to those who are in the system, to nip in the bud, where necessary or when such incidents happen that we are able to apprehend the people involved.

“I join you in praying for the soul of late Ahmed Gulak and also condole with his family, his state, his government and the people of Nigeria.”
