Democracy Day: Madumere Salutes Nigerians, Says Equity, Justice, Fairness Panacea To Nigeria’s Challenges

The former Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Eze Madumere has congratulated Nigerians on the Celebration of June 12 as Democracy Day, saying there is need for just and fair country.

Prince Madumere’s call was expressed in a statement by his Adviser, Media & Publicity, Uche Onwuchekwa.

He felicitated Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari and the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma on the auspicious occasion of Democracy Day, encouraging them to continue in those policies and programmes that will strengthen democratic governance with observance of freedom of the citizenry as enshrined in the constitution.

The former Deputy Governor hails both living and transited legends of democracy, particularly, Chief M.K.O Abiola among many others who paid the ultimate sacrifice to salvage Nigeria from military junta.

He expressed regrets, stating that Nigeria’s journey to nationhood has been abruptly slowed to a crawling point owing to what he described as divisive instinct of most Nigerians occasioned by feeling of marginalisation and lack of justice, equity and fairness.

His statement: “Nigeria unfortunately has remained a state because it has strayed away from the right path of nationhood as a result of divisive instinct of politicians who would in their unpatriotic zeal sacrifice anything for power.

“Democracy remains the best form of government to address these myriad challenges as peace of gun barrel is only a peace of the graveyard.

“I call on leaders and stakeholders to put the people first, make our democratic experience worthwhile by playing according to the rule as there are no losers and winners in an effort to contribute to the uplift of the society and create cohesion and unity in the country.”

Prince Madumere further called on the people to have a change of attitude by ensuring they elect politicians who have their interest at heart. “Our people must reject money for votes stupidity as they are taking pittance for their future. Electoral umpire must continue to improve our electioneering processes with the deployment of functional technology to ensure that people’s mandate is not scuttled by the activities of corrupt politicians”.

He called on agitators with differing grouses against the government to articulate their grievances and manage them through dialogue and other legitimate means.

He insisted that it is only when the yearnings of the people are considered first and treated with justice, fairness and equity that there will be peace and harmony.

“Most grievances are offshoot of unattended frustrations occasioned by real or perceived injustices or unfair treatment.

“I believe that democratic governance has granted the people the opportunity to follow laid down procedures to remedy the anomalies which have been outlined as core causes of Nigeria’s derailment.

“For our Party, All Progressives Congress, the indices are there to show how the party has faired. Railway system is gradually coming back. Our Roads are being attended to while human capital development is receiving huge Investment, especially in agriculture. For the people of South-East, we are happy with second  Niger bridge and promised rail system.

“I must admit that security has remained a challenge and it is very critical to sustainable development. I believe this is an area where all hands must be on deck to roll this burden away. Security should not be Politicised. This is the reason I applaud our Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma when he called on all to join him to fight hydra-headed monster of insecurity.

“I stand for restructuring that will enthrone true federalism, where people will take the front seat as the sovereign and politicians stand as true servant-leaders.
