EXTORTION: Imo Police Commissioner Warns Erring Officers Of Dire Consequences

The State Commissioner of Police, Abutu Yaro, has vowed to deal decisively with officers who extort money from Imo residents.


He stated this on Tuesday while answering questions from newsmen in his office.


The Commissioner enjoined Imolites to report any such incident to his office, adding that officers found wanting would be disciplined accordingly.


He noted that his office would not condone any act of misconduct from any officer, even as he urged the people to always have the courage of not giving money to his men, especially officers carrying out stop and search on major roads in Owerri.

It was gathered that some officers who allegedly indulged in corrupt practices in the state have been arrested and currently being tried in the police orderly room.

However, the Commissioner’s order seems to have felt on deaf ears as his men still engage in extortion from motorists in major parts of the state.


The following areas in Owerri are  extortion points of some police men on stop and search routine; Shoprite junction along Egbu road, Owerri, Orji Flyover along Amaire road Orji etc.


It will be recalled that weeks after Imo people heaved a sigh of relief by the tension created by the dreaded unknown gunmen, motorists are being compelled to pay between N100 and N200 to police officers at the check-points, a practice the CP is not comfortable with.
