Lagos Partners Multinationals To Upscale Affordable Housing Delivery

Lagos state government in a bid to meet up with ever increasing need for affordable housing for the teeming populace has taken steps to upscale its housing delivery performance.

This is in response to the gap in housing demand.

Commissioner for Housing Moruf Akinderu-Fatai said at the weekend in Alausa that the government was pursuing the agenda of housing provision with increased vigour to ensure that more homes were available to the people before the end of the year.

He said: “We are engaging multinationals with other ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to build and support financing of vertical buildings. This is the viable option given the fact that land is a limited resource in the state.

“With the rate of population explosion, meaningful impact can only be achieved through maximisation of our scarce land by the construction of high rise buildings. We are making progress in our discussions with some international organisations.”

According to him, housing schemes at Odo-Onosa Ayandelu, Agbowa, Sangotedo Phase 1, Gbagada and Omole Phase 1 will soon be delivered to the people.

The projects, which he said, were being financed through direct budgetary allocation, were for the low and middle income earners.

He said Lagos was subsidising the cost of the homes to reduce the barrier to home ownership.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has insisted that the cost of homes built by the state should be lower than the market price so as to make home ownership easier for the people,” he said.
