Former First, Lady Aguiyi-Ironsi Bows At 97
Former Nigeria’s First Lady, Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, the wife of late Nigerian head of state, Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, is dead.
The former first lady peacefully passed on Monday at 97. She would have been 98 on November 21, 2021.
Victoria’s husband Aguiyi-Ironsi was the supreme commander of the National Military Government for six months before being overthrown and assassinated in the 1966 Nigerian counter-coup.
Following her husband’s death, Chief Mrs. Victoria Aguiyi-Ironsi, who never re-married.
Aguiyi-Ironsi was named military head of state on 17 January 1966, a position he held until 29 July 1966, when a group of Northern army officers revolted against the government, and killed him.
