57 Die Of Cholera In One Week

1,825 cases reported in 15 states

Latest cholera situation report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has shown that 1,825 cases were reported in 15 states between September 13 and September 19, 2021 (Week 37).

The states are: Zamfara (524), Bauchi (347), Yobe (302), Katsina (282), Borno (139), Adamawa (76), Kano (46), Jigawa (22), Kebbi (22), Gombe (22), Sokoto (13), Kaduna (12), Abia (12), Kwara (five) and Taraba (one).

But Zamfara (524), Bauchi (347), Yobe (302), Katsina (282) and Borno (139) accounted for 87.3 per cent of the suspected cases.

Of the cases reported, there were 55 deaths in the following states: Zamfara (19), Adamawa (seven), Yobe (seven), Jigawa (six), Katsina (five), Borno (five), Kebbi (two), Bauchi (two), and Kwara (two) states with a weekly case fatality ratio (CFR) of three per cent.

The report obtained by The Nation further revealed that as at September 19, 2021, a total of 81,413 suspected cases, including 2,791 deaths (CFR 3.4 per cent) were reported in 28 states and the FCT in 2021.

Also, three states of Bauchi (19,309), Kano (11,783) and Jigawa (10,758) accounted for 51 per cent of all cumulative cases.

Ten local government areas across five states of Bauchi (four), Jigawa (two), Zamfara (two), Kano (one) and Katsina (one), have reported more than 1,000 cases each this year.

Of the suspected cases since the beginning of the year, age group five to 14 years is the most affected among males and females.

Of all suspected cases, 50 per cent were males and 50 per cent were females.
