PSG’s Messi Scores Panenka Penalty To Beat Leipzig
Lionel Messi’s audacious Panenka penalty proved decisive as Paris Saint-Germain came from behind to beat RB Leipzig in a pulsating Group A encounter at Parc des Princes.
The 34-year-old had endured a quiet night by his standards, but two goals in seven second-half minutes from the Argentine magician turned the game on its head, as PSG extended their unbeaten run in Europe.
It took the hosts just 10 minutes to break the deadlock, Kylian Mbappe finishing a rapid counter-attack with a beautiful low right-footed shot that beat Peter Gulacsi at his near post.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah’s 78th minute penalty proved to be the winner as Liverpool edged past 10-man Atletico Madrid in a thrilling Champions League tie.
Liverpool made a blistering start to the game. They went ahead in the eighth minute as Salah dribbled inside and shot from the edge of the area. His effort was deflected into the net off the foot of Geoffrey Kondogbia.
It took them just five minutes to double their advantage. Naby Keita got it as his fierce volley from the edge of the area got the better of Jan Oblak.
Atletico Madrid grew into the game from this point, though. They finished the half superbly as a brace from Antoine Griezmann brought them level.
The French forward was at the forefront again in the 52nd minute. He was shown a straight red card for a high boot on Liverpool attacker Roberto Firmino.
Jurgen Klopp’s side went ahead again in the 78th minute. Salah scored from the penalty spot this time as he sent Oblak the wrong way.
Madrid were awarded a penalty themselves a few minutes later, but the decision was overruled with the help of VAR.
It finished 3-2 and Liverpool are now five points clear of Atletico Madrid at the top of their Champions League group.
