Hellish Ordeal As Gunmen Raze Store, Truck In Enugu

A shop, fully stocked with provisions, cosmetics and household wares, was on Thursday set ablaze by hoodlums enforcing another sit-at-home order in Enugu State.

The incident happened around 8am at Eke Obinagu along Abakaliki Road, Enugu.

The hoodlums also razed a container truck conveying goods to Abakaliki in another incident.

The driver of the truck belonging to Chisco Transport Company was however said to have escaped unhurt in the incident.

It was gathered the shop owner had been operating while the previously cancelled lockdown lasted.

He was said to have opened on Thursday morning when a group of youths approached and forced him out of the shop and set it ablaze.

An eyewitness told The Nation: “They dragged the shop owner out while one of them went to their vehicle to get petrol with which they set the shop ablaze. They also ensured that the fire totally gutted the shop and its contents”

When our correspondent visited the scene, a team of security operatives made up of policemen, soldiers and detectives was seen around the vicinity.

The Nation gathered that Thursday’s sit-at-home was the 14th time Southeast would be turned to ghost towns in two months.

Residents of Enugu State stayed out of the streets, schools, markets and roads as economic and social activities were totally paralysed

Banks, parks, schools major roads and streets, including fuel stations, remained under lock and key.

Markets and government offices opened but there were no one there.

Only few people were seen trekking on the roads.
