Nat. Mathematical Centre Seeks More Investment In STEM Education

The National Mathematical Centre (NMC) has called for more investments in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education.

The NMC Director-General, Prof Promise Mebine, who made the call, noted that the development of any nation was directly proportional to its development and investment in the field of STEM education.

In a statement by the NMC’s Deputy Controller (Information and Public Relations), Onyekachi Njoku, the DG said the Centre would continue to “purposefully expand the frontiers of training and research in recent advances in mathematical sciences.”

He said that this is aimed at achieving success through collective responsibility, collaborations and linkages with industries.

According to him, the advancement of any nation is a product of its advancement in mathematics and technology.

While calling for collaboration with industries and the private sector in the critical areas of training and retraining of available manpower, he pointed out that the Centre can work with them in the application of research results which are critical to industrial growth and development.

Mebine pointed out that well articulated core values of service, intellectualism, integrity and excellence are intertwined with the Centre’s norms of innovation, enthusiasm, motivation and probity necessary to put Nigeria in the global map of mathematics and scientific development.

He said that at 61, the nation should be more advanced in science and technology and therefore called for more funding to enable the Centre achieve its mandate in order to accomplish the dreams of its founding fathers.
