Gunmen Sack C’River Community, Imprison Police Officers, Kill One At Noon
It was like a Hollywood movie when gunmen suspected to have come from the neighbouring Benue State stormed Utanga Community in Obaleku local government area of Cross River State, shooting sporadically, killing one Fidelis.
According to an eyewitness, the incident occured yesterday at about 12 noon. The assailants reportedly held the community under siege for over 3 hours without any intervention from any quarters.
When NewsTrack Nigeria visited the scene of the in crime, the Community in mourning had shut down all the schools in community as children where asked to go home.
Meanwhile, the gunmen reportedly shut the doors and gate against the three police personnel, temporarily imprisoning them while the operation lasted.
Speaking to one of the youths of the community who simply identified himself as Godwin, he said such incidents have become a recurring decimal blaming it on the government for failing to establish well equipped police station.
NewsTrack Nigeria (newstrack.com.ng) in its investigation discovered that from Otuhu junction in Obudu local government area to Utanga till the foot of the Mountain of Obudu Cattle Ranch, which is over 70 kilometers, only one police post serves over 6 communities.
Angry youths were seen blocking roads, querying motorists that plied the road.Other victims who lost different sums of money to the robbery were seen in different groups discussing their ordeals.
