The Portugal international played his first game for Manchester United as a substitute in a 4–0 home win over Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League on the opening day of the season as he came on for Nicky Butt.
Ferguson said he was keen on easing the youngster into league football but added the Portuguese’s performance against Bolton left fans wanting more and left him[Ferguson)debating whether he should bench him again the following week.
“I’ll always remember that when we had the discussion, I think what I wanted to impress upon his agent, in particular, was that he won’t play every game, but if he’s so good, I can’t stop him. You always play your best players,” Ferguson said, according to Metro.
“For the opening game of the season, he was a substitute, came on and was absolutely fantastic. The crowd was magnificent. The crowd loved it.
