Double Tragedy: Confusion As Vigilante Member Shoots Kinsman Dead During  Wake-Keep In Imo



For the people of Ofekata Community in Orodo, Mbaitoli local government of Imo State, they wished they could turn back the hand of time when one of their sons identified as Chidi popularly known as ‘Asari’ blasted the head of his kinsman, Chinedu Asiegbu, with bullets, leading to the latter’s death on Monday morning.

The unfortunate incident occured in the wee hours of Saturday, January 29, 2022 during a wake-keep of one of their sons billed to be buried the same day.

According to a witness who spoke on the condition of anonymity when NewsTrack Nigeria visited the scene, “it was like a dream. We were all preparing for the burial of one of our brothers. So that Friday was a wake-keep which lasted till little did we know that devil would visit us.

“Chidi popularly known as Asari who is one of the members of community vigilante group allegedly shot Chinedu in the head, dashing out his brain.

“We were inside the compound when we heard two gunshots at about 2am, people rushed out only to discover that ‘Asari had shot Chinedu who was wriggling in his own pool of blood.

“The villagers rushed him to the nearby hospital to see if his life could be saved but he later gave up the ghost when he was being taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.

Meanwhile, the victim, according to sources close to the family had bought two motorcycles from Nnewi the same Friday. He was said to have given one to his brother and retained one for his use.

Chidi as at the time of filing this report is still at large as effort to extract information from the Police Command proved futile.

Reason for the crime is not yet ascertained but he was said to have been playing around with gun pointing at people while asking for money for drink.

Now the family of the slain boy are broken with no one agreeing to make any comments.

Tongues are already wagging querying the source of the victim’s source of income.

Our checks show that Asiegbu is less than 18 and still in secondary school.
