Imo To Develop Longest Recreational Park In Nigeria

…..Urges People To Stop Dumping Resuse Indiscriminately As It Contaminates Our Water.
The General Manager of Imo water corporation, Engr. Emeka Ugoanyanwu, has described the ongoing construction of Nworie recreational park and recovering of the river bank by the government of Imo State, as a welcome development. Engr. Ugo Anyanwu, disclosed this today while speaking to newsmen during a project tour.
Engr. Ugoanyanwu, poured encomiums on Governor Hope Uzodinma, for his effort to mainstream the environment into development, through the protection, beautification and recovering of Nworie River. He asserted that the tradition of dumping refuse, indiscriminately, is not only dangerous to the environment but also to human health, opining that the health of fresh water body is also an indicator of the health of an underground water.
Maintaining that if we destroy Nworie River, we are destroying the underground water system, because, the same water flows underground, and the same, our people will still consume. He regretted that about 90 percent of the underground water that people are drinking, today, have been polluted, from all available records, due to the inability of our people to adhere to standard practice and system of handling waste.
He further disclosed that the benefits of what the Governor is doing are enormous to human life, by recovery the environment, protecting the river and saving the health of Imo people. He again, asserted, that with the cleaning up and recovering of Nworie river, he will not only secure the lives of those living in Owerri metropolis, but will also improve the tourist potentials and economic development of Imo State.
He urged Imolites to be concerned about their fresh water body, furthering that it’s highly regrettable that most people do not know the health implications of our polluted water. He reeled out that the youths are suffering from so many health challenges today, such as high blood pressure, typhoid, malaria, kidney failure, cancer, amongst others, due to polluted water system occasioned by the indiscriminate dumping of refuse, faeces, to our rivers and environment.
On what his office is doing to sensitise Imo people about the hazard implications of dumping refuse indiscriminately, Engr. Ugoanyanwu, recapped that development must be integrated, denoting that the collective efforts of the ministry of environment, power, water resources and works, are needed to sensitise our people on the need to stop polluting our rivers and environments for the good of all of us.
