CAN Bemoans Insecurity In The North, Wants Buhari To Convene Security Summit Of Northern Leaders, Stakeholders

The 19 Northern State Chapters of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to Convene a security summit of the Northern Leaders and stakeholders to proffer solution to the seeming eternal security challenges in the region.


The group made the call during its quarterly Executive Council Meeting held in Abuja through its Chairman, Rev. Pam Yakubu, who is a last the Executive Secretary of Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, NCPC.

Addressing newsmen, Rev. Pam described the ongoing carnage in the North, especially in Kaduna as sad, calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to collaborate with notable and experienced leaders and stakeholders in the region to arrest the situation.

He stressed the dire consequences of the present state of fear could bring, saying that the economy of the region is in shambles as no business can thrive where insecurity is prevalent.

He bitterly condemned the mindless killing of women and children who he said are harmless.

He revealed that their quarterly Executive Council Meeting had to be moved to Abuja, abandoning their headquarters in Kaduna because of insecurity.

Reverend Pam insisted that Christians should never cease to pray, saying that God’s intervention and direction should be sought for lasting peace and tranquility in the region and Nigeria at large.

He blamed unemployment as part of the root causes of the security challenges in the region. Proffering solution, he said; “Our youth must be engaged to keep them away from becoming willing tools in the hands of the terrorists.

“It is also important they come to the understanding that white collar job is not readily available. We encourage them to engage into other productive vocations by learning skills and modern farming”.

He used the forum to condemn the recent attack on the Kaduna bound train, which left many people dead, some injured while numerous others are still presumably in their abductors’s den.

He observed that insecurity in the North is beyond religion and ethnicity as every cardre or layer of social stratification is being affected by the security challenges.

“We must as well adopt all inclusive approach to governance so as to bring down the bitter feeling of marginalisation and frustration to the barest minimum.

“We earnestly want our President to liaise with leaders and other experienced stakeholders from the North to come together, brainstorm and marshall out a plan out of the present helpless security situation”, he submitted.
