Sit-at-home Order: Banks, Schools, Markets Shut Again In Imo
Commercial activities in some parts of Imo State and vehicular movement were on Monday crippled following the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) sit-at-home order to residents of South East in solidarity with its detained leader Nnamdi Kanu.
This was contrary to repeated denials by IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, that the organisation has cancelled the order except on the days Kanu would be appearing in court.
Despite this, motorists deserted roads and streets in the State while Okada riders and other road users, banks, schools, markets, filling stations, motor parks and other business centres all were shut for business.
Artisans, wheel burrow pushers and petty traders were also not left out as they all abandoned their businesses for fear of the unknown.
However, some workers reported for duties at the State Secretariat along Owerri-Port Harcourt Road.
In Owerri, the state capital, the picture was more worrisome as high brow areas of Aladinma, Ikenegbu, World Bank, New Owerri and Prefab turned into ghost towns as residents all stayed in-doors.
However, some members of the public who were anxious to get to their destinations especially those on essential duties, were forced to trek long.
The few Okada riders, who were desperate to make a living, however braced up the challenge and charged high fares to convey passengers to where they were going.
Our correspondent who monitored the situation reports that some roads and streets in Owerri metropolis were turned into football pitches by idle youths who played soccer on them.
