Owerri In Ecological Crisis: ACCORD Senatorial Candidate Nwachukwu Pledges To Work With Relevant Agencies To Rescue The Zone


For the past four years, this is the first time any politician either in elective position or vying for a position would mention about the sorry sights major socioeconomic roads and paths in Imo East (Owerri Zone).

Chief Mike Nwachukwu, Standard Bearer of ACCORD Party for Imo East Senatorial visited Ikeduru roads and and said that there should be declaration of state of emergency in the zone.

Mike Nwachukwu who had contested the position in 2015 on the platform of All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) said he visited the 104 wards in the zone to talk to the people to vote for him even as he took his time to assess the state of the roads and infrastructures in the zone. Unfortunately, he could not make it under a controversial circumstances of alleged rigging and manipulation of the process as it took five days for the result to be released.

Asked why he is vying again, he said: ” I am in the race for efficient and effective representation of my good people of Owerri zone.

“It has been four that I passed through this path. Four years has been a long time. I was working in concert with some patriotic Imo Engineers and other professionals to decision these roads and ecological crisis. This time, I decided to revisit some of those areas so as to have a first hand information.

“I had toured most local governments. Owerri West is one of the critical areas that needs urgent attention followed by Mbaitoli -Ikeduru Federal Construction. Even my local governments, Owerri North is different from others.

“This effort is to enable me approach relevant agencies and MDAs to find a way around it. And if elected, this will arm me with the needed instrument to run and make remarkable and effective inputs in the appropriation process”.

For over a decade a road linking Ikeduru and Ahiazu Mbaise has been lying impassable with a gully with over a hundred and one feet cutting off any socioeconomic relationship between the two neighbouring local governments.

This has in no little way affected economic activities in the area, thereby causing untold losses. The same fate has visited the people of Ikeduru where two communities hardly trade with each other as the bridge linking them has long collapses, causing a serious hardship as farmers find it difficult to transport their produce to larger markets where they are needed.

The boundary between Ngor-Okpala and Owerri West is the same as the people have resorted to ineffective self help of using planks to cross over, leading to avoidable losses to the river as people’s keek falling into the flowing river.

Chief Mike Nwachukwu, the Accord Party senatorial candidate for Imo East on Wednesday pledged to engage Ecological Project Office and Federal Ministry of Environment to tackle ecological problems in the area.

Nwachukwu said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, which was obtained by NewsTrack Nigeria.

The senatorial candidate said if elected he would also engage Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) to address erosion and environmental challenges in Imo East Senatorial District (Owerri Zone).

He affirmed his commitment to addressing the deplorable state of roads in the zone (Imo East) if elected senator in 2023.

“These are worst forms of ecological and environmental disaster and they require urgent and robust intervention from Ecological Projects Office
“I will also partner the Federal Ministry of Environment and appropriate agencies such as the World Bank, and Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).

“This requires a very robust and constructive engagement of these agencies. “This robust engagement is what I will bring to the table for Owerri Zone if elected into the senate”, he said.

The senatorial candidate, who called on Nigerians to vote wisely, said it was time to jettison ethnic and religious divisions.

He advised the electorate to resist vote buying and other forms of financial inducement in order not to compromise their future.

Nwachukwu expressed his willingness deliver credible representation to Imo East people through massive collaboration with relevant agencies to attract government presence to the zone.

He called on the appropriate Federal Government agencies and departments to process of take swift action to address the ecological and environmental problems prevalent Imo East Senatorial District.

Meanwhile, Imo State was able to attract Rural Access and Mobility Projects(RAMP) , a project that could have given the State over 400 kilometers of roads with over 12 river crossing.

It is about personalities like Mike Nwachukwu is given the opportunity to pursue some of this developmental goals to a logical conclusion.
