Heinous Crime of Kidnapping: A Threat to Healthcare And Humanity – President, Imo Diaspora Leadership

The unending wave of kidnappings in Nigeria has left the nation reeling in shock and despair. The abduction of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola a Female Medical Practitioner at National Eye Care, her husband, and visiting nephew from the hospital staff quarters on December 27th, 2023, 8 months ago is a stark reminder of the menace that threatens to undermine our healthcare system. This incident coupled with the kidnapping of 19 medical students, a house officer, and a resident doctor in Anambra State, has sparked widespread outrage and calls for immediate action.

The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) has rightly condemned these heinous crimes and threatened to embark on a nationwide strike if their colleagues are not released unconditionally. This ultimatum serves as a wake-up call for the federal government to take decisive measures to address the rampant kidnapping that has become a norm in our society.

The Imo State Leadership In Diaspora Forum Worldwide, under the visionary leadership of Chief Engr. Sampson Udeh, has joined the chorus of voices demanding urgent intervention. Chief Udeh has appealed to Federal Government to take concrete steps to curb the incessant kidnapping that affects not just medical personnel but every citizen of this great nation. The fear of being kidnapped has become a constant companion for many Nigerians, and it is the duty of the government to ensure the safety and security of all.

The consequences of a nationwide medical strike would be catastrophic. The economy, already struggling, would suffer a significant blow. More alarming, however, is the potential loss of lives that would result from the absence of medical care. Sick patients under medical supervision would be left to fend for themselves, and the already overstretched healthcare system would collapse under the pressure.

Kidnapping has become a lucrative business in Nigeria, with medical professionals being targeted for their perceived wealth and influence. This trend is a clear indication of the breakdown of law and order in our society. It is imperative that the government takes bold steps to restore security and ensure that those responsible for these crimes are brought to justice.

The NMA’s ultimatum serves as a reminder that the medical community will no longer tolerate the targeting of its members. The federal government must act swiftly to address the concerns of the medical community and take concrete measures to prevent future kidnappings.

We urge the government to do the following:
Take immediate action to secure the release of the kidnapped medical personnel and other victims.
Launch a comprehensive investigation into the incidents and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Implement effective security measures to protect medical facilities and personnel.
Engage with state and local authorities to strengthen security protocols and prevent future kidnappings.

The Imo State Leadership In Diaspora Forum Worldwide and the NMA are not alone in their demands. The entire nation is crying out for a solution to this crisis. We call on the federal government to rise to the challenge and demonstrate its commitment to the safety and security of all citizens.

The fate of Dr. Ganiya Popoola, her family, and the kidnapped medical students and doctors hangs in the balance. It is our collective responsibility to demand action and ensure that they are reunited with their loved ones. The future of our healthcare system and the well-being of our nation depends on it.
