Many Feared Dead As Boat Capsizes In Kebbi
Many passengers were feared dead in Kebbi when a boat capsized in Niger River on Wednesday.
NewsTrack Nigeria checks revealed that some of the 160 passengers in the boat are also missing.
The boat left Niger and was heading to Kebbi when it split and sank, Abdullahi Buhari Wara, according administrative head of Ngaski district said.
“A rescue operation is underway but only 22 survivors and one dead body has been recovered. We are talking of around 140 passengers still missing,” a local official said.
BBC Hausa Service reported the incident took place on Wednesday around 10 am.
The boat was ferrying passengers including men, women and children.
Efforts are still being made to rescue the victims.
According to BBC Hausa Service, the chairman of Ngaski Local Government Kebbi State, Abdullahi Buhari Warah, who visited the scene to monitor the rescue operation, said it was a tragedy.
