Developing story: Iran retaliates, as missiles hit Iraq base housing US troops

Following the United States killing of the Iranian top General, Qassem Soleimani, there has been barrage of reactions come from no other quarters than from the leadership of Iran, describing the United States action as an ‘International Terrorism.’

According to reports, the Supreme leader of Iran, Ayatola Ayatollah ali khamenei has vowed to unleash a “a severe revenge” over the killing of Soleimani. This follows the request of the daughter of the slain General that her father’s killing be avenged.

NewsTrack gathered that tens of thousands of Iranians on Saturday at the funeral had protested the killing of Soleimani who was taken out through a drone strike last Thursday.

This incident has thrown incensed so much tension in the middle east. While Israeli government has thrown its weight behind the United States over its effort in keeping peace and order.

On the contrary, In Russia , Fm Lavrov had issued  condolences to Iran over the death of their top general.

Interestingly, there are palpable fear that the present diplomatic row might spark off another holocaust with Iranians threatening fire and brimstone. To make real their threat, some rockets have been fired to Baghdad, a facility that houses United States troop and war equipment.

According report “In Baghdad, mortar rounds on Saturday evening hit the Green Zone, the high-security enclave where the US embassy is based, security sources said.

“The Iraqi military said that one projectile hit inside the zone, while another landed close to the enclave.

“Sirens rang out at the US compound, sources there told AFP.

A pair of Katyusha rockets then hit the Balad airbase north of Baghdad, where American troops are based, security sources and the Iraqi military said.

Security sources there reported blaring sirens and said surveillance drones were sent above the base to locate the source of the rockets.

The US embassy in Baghdad, as well as the 5,200 American troops stationed across the country, have faced a spate of rocket attacks in recent months that Washington has blamed on Iran and its allies in Iraq.

One attack last month killed a US contractor working in northern Iraq, prompting retaliatory American air strikes that killed 25 hardline fighters close to Iran.

Tensions boiled over on Friday when the US struck Soleimani’s convoy as it drove out of the airport and US diplomats and troops across Iraq had been bracing themselves for more rocket attacks.

Meanwhile, President Trump and Pentagon had justified the strike, saying that Soleimani had planned a major attack against Americans even after he masterminded an attack at the United States Embassy in Iraq.

Iraq has also been accused of exporting terrorism even as reports had it that Nigeria has had its fair share of Iraqi terrorist influence with the massive weaponry that was intercepted by Nigerian eagle eyed officers. This illegal weapon shipment, which many described as a heinous crime against Nigerian state  was also traced back to the successor of Soleimani, Esmail Ghaani.

With countries forming alliance along differing interest even as Russia and China are yet to make any diplomatic specifics, the question in some quarters is, could the present trappings not have the capacity to cause yet a world holocaust?

The answer lies with the developments in days to come…
