Imo Community petitions Police Area Command over activities of Fulani herdsmen
The people of Logara Autonomous Community, Ngor-Okpala local government area of Imo State, has formally petitioned the Police Area Command, Aboh Mbaise/ Ngor-Okpala,over the incessant destructive activities of Fulani herdsmen in their community.
The protest was contained in a letter titled: “PROTEST LETTER ON FULANI HERDSMEN ACTIVITIES IN LOGARA AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITY, NGOR-OKPALA” signed by the Traditional Ruler of the Community, HRH, Felix Njoku.
The community complained about what they described as an explosive situation where Fulani herdsmen invade their farmlands with their cows, destroying their crops and threatening the lives of the farmers.
According to a letter exclusively obtained by NewsTrack Nigeria (NTN), the community stated that the devastating effect of the cows in their farmlands has thrown the community into panic and confusion.
“The youth and widows are so much infuriated at this ugly development bearing in mind that agriculture is the only means of their livelihood. They imagined what fate that would be fallen them if this trend is left unchecked. They therefore wanted to be confrontational but for the timely intervention of Ruler and the Secretary-General who temporarily put their fury in check”, the statement reads.
The group therefore made a passionate appeal to the Area Commander of Aboh Mbaise/Ngor-Okpala to address the raging issue so as to avert what might result in bloodbath.
According to the source that relayed to NTN, the community also raises fear of the security of their women and lives of the innocent people who might be harmed by the herdsmen.
The community had in the past sent Save-Our-Soul message to the former Interim Management Committee Chairman of Ngro-Okpala local government area of Imo State, which they said was copied to the Divisional Police Officer. They wondered the reason no action has been taken.
Responding to the representatives of Logara Community, the Area Commander, ACP Christopher Bassey sued for peace and appealed to all parties not to take laws into their hands.
He however promised to swiftly wade into the matter, assuring them that he will ensure that the matter is resolved amicably.
