FMC Owerri Medical Workers Protest over admission of Covid – 19 patient in ICU
There was pandemonium in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Federal Medical Center Owerri over the admission of a symptomatic Covid – 19 patient.
The medical workers had resisted the admission of the patient in the ICU complaining of the grave danger to the health workers as 90% of them are abandoned bare and unprotected.
Speaking to one of the Nurses (name withheld), she complained that not every health worker has been trained to handle Covid – 19 cases.
She complained of the shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which has exposed many doctors and nurses to the infection of the dreaded virus.
When NewsTrack Nigeria (TNT) reporter visited the ICU yesterday, investigation revealed that patient who is a Professor of medicine in one of the hospitals in the South East was later transferred to High Dependency Unit (HDU).
TNT checks also reveal that the University Don is from Ugiri – Isiala Mbano local government area of Imo State.
According to our source, the Covid – 19 patient’s condition is in a dire situation as he is said to have underlying sickness being a diabetic patient.
TNT can authoritatively reveal that FMC, Owerri is a time bomb waiting to explode with the level of recklessness on the part of management, which has failed to provide the necessary protective equipment for the health workers.
This was one of the reasons doctors went on nationwide strike following government’s lackadaisical attitude towards providing the necessary equipment.
FMC, Owerri is one of such spot where Covid-19 would find fertile to do its devastating work against the people.
Those going for the treatment of other ailments might be going to contract more dreaded health issues as every health worker in FMC is a potential vector.
There is palpable fear among health workers in FMC, Owerri as each personnel lives today but hopes to live-on or die another day.
