#ENDSARS: Diaspora Group, ISCA, Supports Police Reform, Proffers Way Forward
The Imo State Congress of America, an apex Imo State umbrella group for Imo indigenes in the United States and other northern American countries has joined other well meaning Nigerian in support of the call to end Police Brutality in Nigeria.
The group’s call was expressed in a statement signed by its National President, Engr. Sampson Udeh.
According to the statement the group aligned with Nigerians, saying that the atrocities so far perpetrated has in no little measure given the country a bad eye.
“Police brutality in any guise anywhere in the world is condemnable; and any reluctance to bring the culprits to book smacked of corruption”
The Leader of the group however commended the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu for rising to the occasion by dissolving former Special Anti Robbery Squad, saying that such action has been long overdue.
He also reeled out the suggestions of the group, which he said could be the best way to pacify the citizens and would also serve as a deterrent to bad Cops.
Among some of their demands are:
“All those arrested during the #ENDSARS protests across the country should be released with immediate effect.
“All the previous arrests made under the dissolved SARS should all be called up for review.
“The group also suggested that all the personnel involved in the condemnable acts should all be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others.
“Families of the innocent victims and those falsely accused and inhumanly treated should be compensated.”
ISCA also canvassed for the improvement of the remuneration of the police personnel to dissuade from getting involved in criminality for money.
“We also call for the improvement on the remuneration of the personnel of Nigerian Police Force.
” The Leadership of the Police must be restructured and be state based because inspector General of Police is no God to have the nerve to superintend the administration of the police from Abuja.
“Finally we must audit the competence of the leadership of the security agencies in the country for more effective and efficient service of protection of lives and property.”
He also commended the Federal government for rising up to the occasion and for listening to the yearning of Nigerians, while urging them not to sweep all the agreed demands that borders on police reform and to ameliorate the pains of the victims of Police brutality under the carpet.
