Police Repel Arsonists Attempt To Torch Enugu INEC Office

Again about four vehicles and two cushions were reportedly set ablaze on Sunday night by unknown arsonists who also attempted to burn down the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Enugu State.

According to the Nation learnt that the attempt to set the INEC office ablaze was foiled by joint security operatives, barely one week after another INEC office in Obollo-Afor, Udenu council area, Enugu State, was razed.

Narrating how operatives foiled the attempted attack, the state commissioner of police, Mohammed Aliyu disclosed that the incident which happened late Sunday night was carried out by yet-to-be-identified armed miscreants.

In a release issued on his behalf by the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe, CP Aliyu said the attempted attack was stiffly resisted by joint security operatives, who swiftly mobilized to the scene.

The release added, “Yet to be identified armed miscreants on 16/05/2021 at about 2030hrs, attempted to set the Enugu Headquarters of the Independence National Electoral Commission (INEC) ablaze, but were stiffly resisted by joint security operatives, who swiftly mobilized to the scene.”

The police boss noted that when the hoodlums were chased away, the State Fire Service personnel, who promptly responded to calls, put across to them, helped in quenching fire already set on four vehicles and two cushions within the office premises.

Meanwhile, the commissioner of police, Aliyu, who immediately raced to the scene alongside heads of other Security agencies in the state, has ordered the emplacement of adequate security within the precincts of the INEC office.

He also launched a full-scale investigation to unravel the mystery behind the act as well as fish out the assailants.

The CP used the opportunity to enjoin law-abiding citizens of the state to remain vigilant and promptly volunteer useful information that would help the police in the investigation.
