Ondo Assembly Charge Ministry To Restore Sanity In Schools
Ondo House of Assembly has urged the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology to restore sanity in schools and be proactive in their periodic monitoring.
Chairman, House Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Simeon Borokini, stated this on Friday in Akure during an oversight visit to the ministry.
Borokini, in company of his committee members, called on all schools heads and teachers to be alive to their responsibilities or be dealt with, insisting that sanity must be restored to all the schools in the state.
He also urged relevant government establishments to ensure that all the workers awaiting their promotion letters got get them on time.
The chairman, who stressed the need to curb truancy in schools and ensure qualitative education, further called on the quality assurance department in the ministry to ensure that core values were strictly adhered to.
The News agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that other members of the committee also emphasised the need for the ministry to carefully look into the operations of boarding schools across the state.
This, they said, was to ensure proper grooming of students and guard against any possible unwholesome act.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs Lola Amuda, reeled out the guidelines for the establishment of private schools in the state.
According to her, the minimum qualification for the post of head teachers for nursery and primary schools is National Certificate in Education, while those in secondary schools must be graduates of Education.
Amuda added that a two-year provisional approval was being granted to schools considered viable in a conducive environment, having acquired permanent sites.
She said that the ministry was working assiduously to ensure that distance between two schools of the same level should not be more than 500 metres apart, with functional health facilities.
The permanent secretary assured that the ministry would continue to consult with critical stakeholders and review operational guidelines, where necessary.
